Lahore: Following the recent hike in diesel prices, Pakistan Railways has increased fares for passenger trains by 2%, according to an official statement issued on Tuesday.

A spokesperson for Pakistan Railways confirmed that the fare hike is effective immediately, citing the rising operational costs due to the surge in fuel prices. The move is expected to impact thousands of daily commuters across the country.

In addition to railway fares, intra-provincial and inter-provincial transport services have also raised their charges. Transporters in several regions, including Quetta, have announced fare increases. Rickshaw drivers in Quetta alone have increased rates by PKR 50 to PKR 100, sparking complaints from regular passengers.

The price hikes come in the wake of the federal government’s decision to raise petroleum product prices. Petrol now costs PKR 5.36 more per liter, while high-speed diesel has surged by PKR 11.37 per liter.

Commuters and transport unions have expressed concern over the cascading effect of rising fuel prices on public transport affordability, especially for low-income households.
