The Punjab Home Department has launched the province’s first Cyber Patrol and Quick Response Cell—a dedicated unit for monitoring online content in real time.

Operating under the Home Department’s direct supervision, the cell is responsible for identifying, flagging, and responding to objectionable and sectarian material on social media platforms.

According to an official statement issued on Monday, the new initiative aims to counter the spread of fake news, hate speech, and incitement to violence, particularly during the sensitive Islamic month.

“The Cyber Patrol Cell has been actively scanning digital platforms for provocative posts, misinformation, and content that promotes sectarian hatred,” the department spokesperson stated.

Flagged content will be forwarded to the Special Branch for verification and necessary legal action. The Home Department has also confirmed collaboration with the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) and the Federal Ministry of Interior to ensure swift content blocking and identify the operators behind such accounts.

The Special Branch has been directed to pursue takedowns and support the tracing of sources spreading inflammatory material online.

The launch of the Cyber Patrol Cell is part of broader efforts to maintain public order and protect religious sensitivities during Muharram, a time when sectarian tensions historically tend to rise.
