The Punjab government has announced a major green initiative to encourage eco-friendly practices, offering a cash reward of Rs100,000 to motorcyclists who convert their petrol bikes into electric vehicles (EVs) under the Green Credit Program.

The announcement was made on Monday by Senior Provincial Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb, who said the scheme is part of Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif’s broader vision to tackle air pollution, promote clean mobility, and expand Punjab’s green cover.

The Green Credit Program allows citizens to earn financial rewards (green credits) for reducing carbon emissions. Besides converting bikes to EVs, participants can also gain credits by:

  • Planting trees under official drives.

  • Switching to LED lighting to reduce energy consumption.

Citizens can register and apply through the program’s official website.

Aurangzeb highlighted that the Punjab government is actively promoting tree plantation through the “Plant for Pakistan” initiative. Key measures include:

  • Free sapling delivery in Lahore via helpline 1399.

  • 300,000 trees to be planted along Ring Road.

  • Australian-style tree monitoring technology to map and track growth.

  • Establishment of a technology-driven fire control force under the supervision of the Bank of Punjab.

The minister also stressed that improving Lahore’s air quality is a government priority. So far, seven air quality monitors have been installed across the city under the Punjab Air Quality System, while smog control remains a central focus of environmental policy.

“It is the responsibility of every Lahori to plant more trees. The more we plant, the better our air quality index will become,” Aurangzeb said.

The new measures are expected to incentivize sustainable living, reduce carbon emissions, and combat worsening air pollution across Punjab.
