The Punjab Wildlife Department has made it compulsory to register several parrot species, including Alexandrine, Rose-ringed, Slaty-headed, and Plum-headed parrots. The new rules aim to stop illegal trading and improve conservation efforts.

According to the notification, all parrots kept as pets or bred in captivity must be registered under the second schedule of Wildlife Regulations. Owners will need to pay a fee of Rs. 1,000 per bird.
The department has also introduced a system to classify breeders as small-scale or large-scale for better monitoring. Parrot sales will now be limited to licensed dealers only, which officials believe will help end unregulated transactions.

A spokesperson said the main goal is to protect these species and encourage responsible breeding practices across Punjab.
