The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has issued a heatwave alert for the Eid-ul-Azha holidays, warning of unusually high temperatures across much of the country.

According to the latest forecast, temperatures in northern regions are likely to remain around 7°C above normal until June 12. In southern parts of Pakistan, the mercury may rise by 4 to 6°C above the seasonal average.

Officials have urged people to take preventive measures, particularly vulnerable groups such as children, the elderly, and women. The public has been advised to avoid unnecessary exposure to direct sunlight and to drink plenty of water to prevent dehydration.

The PMD has also highlighted a potential environmental impact. It cautioned that the extreme heat could speed up glacier melt in the northern areas, which may lead to increased water flows downstream in rivers and streams. This could affect communities living in vulnerable flood zones.

Authorities are expected to monitor the situation closely and may issue further updates if weather conditions worsen.

As Pakistan prepares for Eid, the focus remains not only on celebration but also on public health and safety amid rising temperatures.
