The long wait is over as Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif personally inaugurated Pakistan’s first urban electric train, the Super Autonomous Rapid Transit (SRT), by conducting a live trial run from Ali Town to Muslim Town in Lahore.
The experimental journey marked a major step toward sustainable public transportation in the country, with the Chief Minister herself onboard to inspect the state-of-the-art vehicle and monitor its performance amidst regular traffic conditions.
Accompanied by Provincial Transport Minister Bilal Akbar Khan, CM Maryam reviewed the onboard facilities and received a comprehensive briefing on the train’s advanced features, capacity, and the potential benefits for the general public.
The electric train, developed by Norinco International, has already seen successful operations in Turkey, China, Abu Dhabi, and other global cities. With a standard configuration of three carriages, expandable to four, it can carry up to 320 passengers and travel up to 40 kilometres on a single charge.

Equipped with modern amenities including air conditioning, smart systems, and zero-emission technology, the SRT aims to reduce environmental pollution, ease traffic congestion, and offer a more comfortable and efficient commuting experience for Lahore’s citizens.
During the visit, enthusiastic residents along Raiwind Road and Canal Road witnessed the sleek, futuristic train as it glided along its route, signaling a new chapter in Pakistan’s urban transport system.
“Every day brings good news for the people of Punjab,” CM Maryam declared. “The SRT will not only solve commuting issues but will also add to Lahore’s urban beauty and smart city vision.”
She also announced that similar projects are being planned for Gujranwala and Faisalabad, ushering in a province-wide transformation in public transport through sustainable innovation.
