The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA), is set to hear a petition that could lead to a decrease in tariffs, offering potential relief to consumers.
Power distribution companies have requested a reduction of Rs 52.12 billion under the second quarterly adjustment for the current fiscal year.
The adjustment includes Rs 50.66 billion in capacity charges, Rs 2.66 billion in transmission and distribution losses, and Rs 2.69 billion in operation and maintenance costs.
If the proposal approved, the revised tariff will take effect between October and December 2024, reflecting in consumer electricity bills.
The electricity regulator will review the proposal and forward its decision to the federal government for final approval.
Last month, NEPRA had announced a minor increase of 20 paise per unit in electricity rates as part of the previous quarterly adjustment.
The hike, applicable for December 2024, placed an additional financial burden of Rs 1.18 billion on the already burdened consumers .
However, lifeline and prepaid electricity users, as well as those benefiting from the winter package, were exempted from the increase.
The upcoming decision on tariff reduction could ease financial pressure on households and businesses already grappling with high energy costs.
