QUETTA:  In a shocking development in the ongoing investigation into an alleged honor killing in Balochistan’s Degari area, police have arrested the mother of the victim, Bano Bibi, after she publicly defended her daughter’s murder in a video statement circulating on social media.

According to media reports, the woman was presented before a court and later handed over to the Serious Crime Investigation Wing for further interrogation.

The case centers around the killing of Bano Bibi, a mother of five, who was allegedly murdered for having a relationship with a man named Ihsanullah. In her video statement, the victim’s mother claimed the act was carried out in accordance with Balochi tribal customs and sanctioned by a local jirga (tribal council). She also defended the suspects, including tribal elder Sardar Sherbaz Satakzai, asserting that the decision was taken collectively by the jirga and not under Satakzai’s influence.

The woman alleged that Ihsanullah had been posting TikTok videos, which enraged her sons and led to the fatal outcome.

Authorities have so far registered a First Information Report (FIR) under several serious charges, including Section 302 (murder) of the Pakistan Penal Code and Section 7 of the Anti-Terrorism Act.

As of now, 20 individuals have been taken into custody, with 11 formally arrested, including Sardar Sherbaz Satakzai.

The incident has sparked widespread outrage across Pakistan, with human rights activists demanding justice and accountability. The video confession by the mother has intensified public scrutiny over the persistence of so-called ‘honor’ killings, especially those sanctioned by unofficial tribal mechanisms.

The Balochistan government has vowed to pursue the case with full force, declaring that “no one is above the law.”
