KARACHI: Mobile phone services have been suspended in Karachi and several other cities across Pakistan today as part of heightened security measures for the 9th Muharram processions.

Authorities have sealed off sensitive locations in major cities, while mobile networks began shutting down in various areas of Karachi early Saturday. Alongside mobile disruptions, internet connectivity has also been affected in parts of the city.

Residents in Lyari reported difficulties in communication due to the lack of mobile signals, particularly at the site of a recent tragic incident. On Friday, a five-storey residential building collapsed in Lyari’s Baghdadi area, leaving six families buried under the rubble. So far, 16 people have been confirmed dead in the disaster.

The suspension of mobile services is a standard precautionary measure implemented annually during Muharram to prevent any untoward incidents during religious processions. The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) and local law enforcement are monitoring the situation closely.
