A new 16-kilometre motorway is planned to connect Lahore and Raiwind, officials revealed during a meeting of the Senate Standing Committee on Planning, chaired by Senator Quratulain Marri.
The committee reviewed updates on several national development schemes. Representatives from the Ministry of Planning shared that Rs1 trillion was spent in the last fiscal year under the Public Sector Development Programme (PSDP).
In the current fiscal year, 55 unapproved projects have been added to the PSDP, pending No Objection Certificates (NOCs) from the Planning Commission after detailed scrutiny.
Officials from the National Highway Authority (NHA) stated that a land survey is underway for the Lahore-Raiwind motorway, with the project to be funded by the Punjab government.

Senator Marri questioned the need for this project, asking whether a motorway was being planned for a single residence, hinting at possible political influence.
In addition, Rs100 billion has been earmarked for the N-5 Highway in Balochistan, and foreign support is available for seven other road projects. The Islamic Development Bank will finance three sections of the M-6 Motorway, while two segments will be completed under a public-private partnership.
Upgrades are also planned for the Grand Trunk (GT) Road alongside the Hyderabad-Sukkur Motorway route.
