In a significant development, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif of Pakistan and Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi joined hands to inaugurate the Mand-Pishin border market and the Gabd-Polan power transmission line, marking a quantum leap in the Pakistan-Iran relationship. The prime minister expressed his belief that these projects would bring about socioeconomic development and benefit the people of Gwadar.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif commended the efforts of the energy ministers and relevant organizations from both countries for completing the previously stalled Gabd-Polan power transmission line within a record time. He emphasized the immense potential for bilateral energy and petroleum projects and called for concerted efforts to harness this potential for the mutual benefit of the two nations.

The prime minister also highlighted the significance of the Pishin-Mand border market, stating that six similar markets would be developed in the region, leading to a new era of progress. During his meeting with President Raisi, they discussed cooperation in the solar energy sector, and the Iranian leader expressed his willingness to cooperate in this area. Delegations from both sides are expected to visit each other to collaborate on solar energy projects. Furthermore, the prime minister extended an invitation to President Raisi, which was accepted.

To strengthen bilateral ties, the prime minister assured President Raisi of his support in creating a joint security mechanism to counter any attempts by adversaries to undermine the relationship between the two countries. President Raisi highlighted the strengthening of Pak-Iran relations based on their shared religious bond and expressed Iran’s desire to enhance cooperation in the energy sector. He congratulated the Government of Pakistan on the completion of the 100MW power transmission project and anticipated the generation of employment opportunities for locals.

The Mand-Pishin border sustenance market, one of six to be constructed along the Pak-Iran common border, will provide a platform for cross-border trade, economic growth, and opportunities for local businesses. In a symbolic gesture, both leaders planted a sapling at the market premises, signifying progress in bilateral relations.

During the meeting, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif announced that Pakistan and Iran are on the verge of finalizing a Free Trade Agreement to fully exploit the immense potential in trade and investment between the two countries. They also discussed areas of cooperation such as information technology, agriculture, and power transmission.

The productive meeting between the leaders demonstrates the commitment to strengthen ties and explore new avenues for collaboration. The prime minister pledged to implement the decisions made during the meeting, including those related to the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC). The future looks promising for Pakistan and Iran as they strive to foster dialogue, resolve regional disputes, and achieve lasting peace.
