Punjab has launched a landmark initiative to help prisoners maintain closer ties with their families during incarceration. Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has approved a new policy that allows eligible inmates to live temporarily with their immediate families inside jail premises, a move described as the first of its kind in the province.
According to officials from the Punjab Home Department, the policy applies to prisoners serving more than five years in jail. These inmates can now apply to spend time with their spouses and young children in specially designated family rooms located within prison boundaries.
Under the new guidelines, inmates may avail this facility up to three times a year, with each visit lasting a maximum of three consecutive days. Children under the age of six are allowed to accompany their mothers or fathers during these visits, and meals will be provided free of charge during their stay.

To use this facility, either the inmate or their spouse must submit a written application to the prison superintendent. The request is then forwarded to the relevant Deputy Commissioner for formal approval. Once the permission is granted, arrangements for the stay are finalized.
The government stated that the policy has been designed to support emotional well-being and help inmates maintain essential family connections, which could contribute positively to their rehabilitation.
