Imran Khan Case Raised at UNHRC Son Kasim Alleges Human Rights Violations in Pakistan

The case of Imran Khan has reached the global stage, as his son Kasim Khan addressed the United Nations Human Rights Council, raising serious concerns about his father’s treatment in prison. In a powerful statement, Kasim claimed that the situation is not just about one individual, but reflects a wider pattern of alleged human rights violations in Pakistan.

Imran Khan has been imprisoned since 2023 and is currently serving a 14-year sentence in a corruption case linked to Toshakhana gifts. He is being held at Adiala Jail. His family and party members have repeatedly raised concerns about his conditions, claiming that he is being kept in solitary confinement and denied regular access to visitors.

During his speech, Kasim told the council that his father’s case is the “most visible example” of broader issues in Pakistan since 2022. He pointed to reports of political detentions, military trials of civilians and restrictions on journalists, which he said indicate a pattern of repression.

Kasim also highlighted Pakistan’s commitments under international agreements, including the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights and the United Nations Convention against Torture. He argued that the alleged treatment of his father, including limited family contact and concerns over medical care, may violate these obligations.

Health concerns have added urgency to the situation. Earlier this year, reports emerged that Imran Khan was suffering from an eye condition, raising questions about the quality of medical care available to him in custody.

In his emotional address, Kasim said that he and his brother never intended to step into political matters, but felt compelled to speak out due to their father’s condition. He stressed that they could not remain silent as his health reportedly deteriorates.

Separately, Kasim recently shared a message from his father on social media, in which Imran Khan criticized the judiciary. Meanwhile, government officials, including Attaullah Tarar, have stated that arrangements were being made for Imran Khan to speak with his children on Eid.

The issue continues to draw attention both within Pakistan and internationally, as debates over legal processes, human rights and political freedom remain ongoing.
