Heavy Monsoon Rains in Pakistan: NDMA Issues Flood Alerts for July 2025

Pakistan is expected to experience a fresh spell of widespread monsoon rains over the next eight days, with the Meteorological Department (PMD) and National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) issuing alerts for flash floods, urban flooding, landslides, and transport disruption across multiple regions.

According to the PMD, the ongoing rain spell will continue until July 5, followed by a new wave of westerly winds entering northern regions on July 6, likely to bring heavy to very heavy rainfall across Kashmir, Gilgit-Baltistan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP), Punjab, Balochistan, and Islamabad until July 10.

Forecasted Rainfall (July 5–10)

  • Khyber Pakhtunkhwa: Dir, Swat, Chitral, Kohistan, Shangla, Buner, Battagram, Mansehra, Abbottabad, Haripur, Peshawar, Bannu, Dera Ismail Khan, Bajaur

  • Punjab: Lahore, Rawalpindi, Murree, Gujranwala, Sialkot, Narowal, Mandi Bahauddin, Chakwal, Attock, Jhelum, Chiniot, Faisalabad, Sheikhupura

  • South Punjab: DG Khan, Rajanpur

  • Gilgit-Baltistan & Kashmir: From July 6 to 10

  • Balochistan: Northern, eastern, and southern areas from July 6 to 8

  • Islamabad & Galiyat

Risks and Warnings by NDMA

The NDMA and PDMA have issued multiple warnings, including:

  • Urban flooding in Lahore, Sialkot, and Narowal

  • Flash floods in hill streams of DG Khan and Rajanpur

  • Flooding risk in Kabul River near Nowshera

  • Landslides in hilly regions of KP and GB

  • Glacial Lake Outburst Floods (GLOFs) in mountainous areas

  • Low-level flooding near Tarbela due to rising water inflows

  • Damage to weak structures, poles, and billboards due to strong winds

  • Transport disruption and visibility issues due to continuous rain and landslides

NDMA Deputy Director Irfan Virk stated,

“Flash flooding is possible in upper and southern areas, but the rains will also help in increasing water levels in major dams.”

Recent Rainfall (Last 24 Hours)

  • Murree: 48mm

  • Rawalpindi: 18mm

  • Narowal: 15mm

  • Attock: 14mm

PDMA Punjab confirmed no abnormal river flooding so far but warned of rising inflows from July 7.

Public Advisory

Authorities urge citizens to:

  • Avoid non-essential travel, especially to hilly and flood-prone areas

  • Stay away from billboards, electric poles, and mud structures during storms

  • Follow official advisories from NDMA, PDMA, and local administration

  • Tourists should postpone trips to the northern areas
