A female member of the Punjab Assembly has filed the first-ever workplace harassment complaint in the assembly’s history, further complicating matters for the 26 opposition members who were suspended earlier this month.
Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) MPA Rahila Khadim Hussain submitted a formal petition to Speaker Malik Muhammad Ahmad Khan on Tuesday, accusing four opposition lawmakers of using abusive and highly inappropriate language during a recent assembly session. The complaint includes audio recordings that reportedly support her claims.
In the petition, Ms Hussain said the behaviour created a hostile environment for female lawmakers and violated the decorum expected in the provincial legislature. She alleged that some female opposition members led the use of offensive language, calling it a clear case of workplace harassment.

She also pointed to Rule 223 of the Rules of Procedure of the Punjab Assembly, arguing that the actions of the accused were in conflict with their oath of office. The lawmaker urged the Speaker to begin disqualification proceedings and implement disciplinary actions under the 2010 harassment laws.
While the Speaker’s office has yet to issue an official statement, sources say the matter is being reviewed and could be forwarded to the relevant committee.
The complaint comes after 26 opposition members were suspended earlier this month following a disruptive session marked by slogans and shouting across party lines.
