Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif is expected to launch the country’s first large-scale Electric Bike Scheme on August 14, marking a major step toward promoting clean transportation and reducing Pakistan’s reliance on fuel imports.

According to official sources, the federal government has set aside Rs9 billion in the current budget to support the rollout of e-bikes, offering a subsidy of Rs65,000 per unit. The remaining amount will be covered by interest-free loans provided through selected banks, making the scheme more accessible to the general public.

The initiative aims to make electric motorcycles affordable for low- and middle-income citizens, while also encouraging a shift toward sustainable transport. An online registration system will soon be opened for applicants, and if applications exceed the allocated quota, a balloting system will be used to select the recipients.

Officials stated that this scheme forms part of the country’s broader Electric Vehicles Policy. The national plan targets the deployment of two million electric bikes by 2030, alongside nearly 100,000 electric cars, over 2,000 electric buses, nearly 3,000 trucks, and more than 53,000 e-rickshaws.

The first phase of the project includes setting up 40 fast-charging stations across the country. In addition, Islamabad will be transformed into a model electric vehicle city, with charging points to be installed at every petrol station in the capital.
