Islamabad’s administration has stepped up efforts to combat air pollution by launching a fresh crackdown on vehicles that emit visible smoke.

The campaign, which follows an earlier shutdown of brick kilns, now focuses on reducing vehicle-related air pollution. As part of the plan, free emissions testing is available across three city locations until August 31: Old Parade Ground, F-9 Park, and the Excise Office.

Vehicles that pass the emissions test are awarded a barcode sticker, allowing them unrestricted access into the city. Cars manufactured from 2021 onwards are temporarily exempt from testing in the current phase.

Officials have reported that between July 15 and July 31, a total of 2,778 vehicles underwent inspection. Out of these, 2,665 met the environmental standards.

The testing centers are equipped with internationally approved devices and cater to both personal and commercial vehicles. The goal is to ensure cleaner air for Islamabad’s residents while raising awareness about the impact of vehicle emissions.

Authorities have also announced that starting from September 1, any smoke-emitting vehicle attempting to enter the capital will be fined. The current complimentary testing service will end by then, making way for full enforcement of the rules.

Several residents have praised the step, but have requested additional centers to make the process faster and more accessible.
