Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif met with a delegation of tribal elders from the merged districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa on Thursday at the Prime Minister House, reaffirming the government’s commitment to development and stability in the region.

The delegation, led by JUI-F chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman, participated in a Jirga aimed at addressing regional concerns around peace, infrastructure, and governance. During the meeting, the Prime Minister announced the restoration of educational quotas for students from the merged districts in medical and engineering institutions—a decision warmly welcomed by the tribal representatives.

Mr Sharif acknowledged the sacrifices made by the tribal people in the fight against terrorism and praised their contributions to Pakistan’s security. He noted that strengthening law and order in the region remains a top government priority.

The Prime Minister also paid tribute to the security forces for their continued role in ensuring national stability. He urged unity among all segments of society to collectively work toward lasting peace.

Highlighting key development initiatives, Mr Sharif said the federal government had earmarked significant funds in the current budget for upgrading infrastructure and improving education and healthcare facilities. Projects such as the expansion of FATA University and new police infrastructure were specifically mentioned.

He further instructed that the federal committee on merged districts, chaired by Minister Engr Amir Muqam, be expanded to include tribal representation for more inclusive policy-making.

The elders expressed appreciation for the restoration of educational quotas and their inclusion in key decision-making processes. They also acknowledged the government’s efforts to address development gaps and praised the military’s stance in recent regional tensions.

Senior ministers and advisers, including KP Governor Faisal Karim Kundi and former Chief Minister Pervez Khattak, also attended the session.
