Karachi’s public transport network is set for a major expansion as double-decker buses are scheduled to begin service in the city next month. The announcement was made by Sindh Transport Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon, who said the initiative forms part of the wider Peoples Bus Service (PBS) programme aimed at improving urban mobility.

According to the minister, the government has already launched multiple projects under PBS to make daily travel more accessible. These include the Pink Bus, which is dedicated to women commuters, and the soon-to-be-launched Pink Taxi service, also designed exclusively for female passengers.

The upcoming introduction of double-decker buses is a significant part of this plan. Transport officials revealed that five double-decker and 34 electric buses are expected to arrive in Karachi in June. A further 100 buses are due later in the month, expanding the city’s fleet and offering more eco-friendly transport options.

Authorities believe this upgrade will help reduce traffic congestion and offer better alternatives for citizens reliant on public transport. The addition of electric buses also aligns with broader goals to cut down on urban pollution and modernise Karachi’s transit system.

The Sindh government views these efforts as key steps toward transforming the city’s outdated transport infrastructure into a more efficient and inclusive system.
