Controversy over Maryam Nawaz flag at Gujrat College.

A government college in Gujrat, Punjab, recently came under criticism after a flag featuring the picture of Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif was placed alongside the national flag of Pakistan on the college building. The move sparked debate both online and within educational circles, with many questioning whether political imagery should be displayed at government institutions.

According to reports, the Deputy Director of Colleges Gujrat, Shoaib Butt, summoned the college principal to explain the matter. In his written statement, the principal said that he was deeply inspired by Maryam Nawaz’s initiatives and leadership in Punjab, which led him to install the flag as a gesture of appreciation. However, the education department viewed the act as inappropriate for a public institution and issued a warning, advising the principal to be more careful in the future.

The incident gained attention after videos went viral on social media, showing the flag with Maryam Nawaz’s image flying next to Pakistan’s national flag at the Government Graduate College for Boys. This act received mixed reactions some called it a personal expression of admiration, while others criticized it for blurring the line between public service and political promotion.

While the principal has claimed full responsibility and admitted it was his personal decision, the authorities have reminded all colleges to maintain neutrality and uphold official protocols regarding national symbols. The event has once again opened discussion on keeping educational institutions free from political influence and ensuring that respect for national identity remains above personal admiration.
