The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Urban Mobility Authority has approved a fare increase for the Peshawar Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system, raising the per-stop rate by Rs10. The new pricing structure is set to take effect from July 1.

According to a statement issued by the Transport Department, the hike has been introduced in response to ongoing inflation and aims to curb the financial deficit faced by the BRT service. Officials noted that the adjustment was necessary to ensure the long-term sustainability of the public transport system.

The decision is expected to draw mixed reactions from commuters who depend on the BRT for affordable daily travel across Peshawar. The fare hike could place additional financial strain on passengers, many of whom are already dealing with rising living costs.

This development follows a recent episode in Islamabad, where the Capital Development Authority (CDA) attempted to increase fares for metro and electric buses. That move faced immediate backlash, with commuters and transport activists strongly opposing the change.

Despite initial denials, the CDA proceeded with the fare adjustment, only to reverse it after mounting public pressure. The rollback restored original ticket prices, offering relief to regular users in the federal capital.
