Bilawal Bhutto Zardari stirred fresh controversy during a press conference in New York, where he sharply criticised Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. While comparing Modi to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu over their treatment of Muslims, it was his metaphor that triggered unexpected backlash online.

Bhutto labelled Modi a “Temu version of Netanyahu,” referring to the Chinese e-commerce platform known for its affordability and rapid rise. Though intended as a political jab, the remark drew criticism for reinforcing outdated stereotypes about Chinese innovation, and many saw it as a swipe at Chinese tech progress.

The controversial analogy overshadowed his broader political message, which included a reminder of Modi’s alleged roles in the Gujarat riots and the Kashmir conflict. Bhutto accused Modi of evolving “from the Butcher of Gujarat to the Butcher of Kashmir,” adding that he now appears intent on damaging the historic Indus Valley region.

Former PTI leader Asad Umar responded on platform X (formerly Twitter), defending Temu. He highlighted the app’s rapid growth in the US, stating it now reaches 10% of Amazon’s user base and could soon overtake it.

The unintended fallout from Bhutto’s remark sparked a wave of responses from tech analysts and influencers. Some defended Temu as a symbol of Chinese innovation, while others said Bhutto’s analogy distracted from the serious political message.
