At least 18 people have lost their lives after a powerful explosion hit an illegal coal mine in the northeastern Indian state of Meghalaya. The tragic incident took place on Thursday and has shocked the local community.
The explosion happened inside the mine and is suspected to have been caused by dynamite. The blast occurred in a forested area located about 72 kilometers from the state capital, Shillong.
Rescue teams were rushed to the site soon after the inciden. 18 bodies have been recovered so far. One worker who suffered severe burn injuries was taken to a hospital in Shillong, where he is currently receiving treatment. It is still unclear how many workers may be trapped underground, as the exact number of people working in the mine at the time is unknown.
Meghalaya police officer Kumar said rescue operations are ongoing, but the remote location and unsafe conditions have made the work difficult. Efforts are continuing to ensure no one is left behind.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed deep sorrow over the loss of lives. He announced financial assistance for the victims and their families. According to the announcement, the families of those who died will receive 200,000 rupees each, while those injured will be given 50,000 rupees.
The mine was operating illegally, and authorities have not yet identified the people who owned or managed it. A case has been registered against unknown individuals, and an investigation has been launched to determine responsibility.
Police have also said that the identities of the victims are still being confirmed. Many illegal mines in the region employ migrant workers, making identification more challenging.
The incident has once again raised serious concerns about illegal mining and worker safety in Meghalaya. Officials say strict action will be taken once the investigation is complete.
