Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif has given the green light for the transfer of surplus teachers across the province, as part of a broader effort to address teacher shortages in government schools. The School Education Department confirmed that the rationalisation process has officially commenced.

Under this initiative, surplus teachers from overstaffed schools will be reassigned to institutions in need of staff. Officials clarified that the move targets only teaching staff, and no sanctioned posts in any school will be eliminated or altered.

Initially, the rationalisation plan was set to relocate around 47,000 teachers. However, after discussions with teacher unions and associations, the number has been revised to approximately 25,000.

The School Education Department noted that teachers identified as surplus have already received formal notifications. To make the process smoother, the department has introduced a preference system, allowing teachers to select their desired transfer locations, wherever possible.

This rationalisation effort is being viewed as a step towards improving educational standards by ensuring balanced teacher distribution across Punjab. It also aims to reduce overcrowding in certain schools while addressing staff shortages in others.
