In an effort to overcome the ongoing shortage of healthcare professionals, the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government has announced a new plan to hire medical officers on fixed contracts in Mardan, Upper Dir, Batkhela, and Haripur.

A special grievance committee has been formed to handle complaints during the recruitment process. Led by the Special Secretary of Health, the committee includes key figures from the department. Complaints must be submitted in writing, along with evidence, no later than August 10.

Authorities have reassured candidates that the recruitment process will be transparent, with strong oversight to ensure fair selection.

The shortage of doctors in KP has long been a concern. To improve healthcare delivery, the Health Department has started placing 115 medical officers and 51 consultants in District Headquarters Hospitals (DHQs). The appointments are aimed at activating specialist units in rural areas.

According to officials, priority will be given to candidates from the same region to strengthen local care and prevent staff transfers. The Health Advisor behind the initiative said the approach not only creates job opportunities for doctors but also helps patients avoid long-distance travel for treatment.

Meanwhile, the government has also committed to filling 248 vacant administrative roles in the health sector. A separate effort is underway to accelerate the hiring of 600 specialist doctors through the Public Service Commission, a step seen as crucial to restoring full hospital operations in underserved regions.

The Provincial Doctors Association has welcomed the initiative. Following its recommendation, the age limit for applicants has been extended from 32 to 37 years, giving more medical professionals the chance to apply.
