A major public healthcare milestone is on the horizon as Khyber Teaching Hospital (KTH) prepares to launch the Institute of Bone Marrow, Kidney, and Liver Transplant within two months. The facility aims to provide free transplant services to patients across Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, where the need for organ transplants continues to rise.
According to Dr Amjad Ali Khan, focal person to the chief minister on health, work on the institute is nearly complete, and Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur is expected to inaugurate it soon. Dr Amjad, who also serves as a PTI MNA from Swat, confirmed that Rs500 million has already been allocated for the project, with further funding pledged as needed.

The institute is set to offer free kidney, liver, and bone marrow transplants, significantly reducing the burden on patients who currently pay up to Rs6.2 million in private hospitals through Sehat Card Plus. Initially, around 70 transplants will be conducted monthly.
Awareness campaigns and facilitation centres will be established at the divisional level to educate the public about the services and promote organ donation. Dr Amjad noted that cultural hesitation around donation remains a challenge, prompting plans for provincial legislation to support the use of deceased donors’ organs.
The project is receiving support from national transplant centres including those in Gambat, SIUT, and PKLI. In the first phase, kidney and liver transplants will begin, followed by bone marrow transplants in the next stage—marking a significant step toward accessible, legal organ transplant services in the province.
