The Suki Kinari hydropower station has completed its inaugural year of operations, delivering 2.7 billion kilowatt-hours of renewable electricity to Pakistan’s grid, according to Chinese officials.
The plant, developed under the China–Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), is being hailed as a milestone in Pakistan’s clean energy transition. Officials said its contribution reduces the country’s reliance on imported fuel and strengthens long-term energy stability.
The project has also generated notable socio-economic benefits. More than 6,000 people were employed during the construction phase, providing opportunities in a region where jobs are limited. The company also led a plantation drive of 150,000 trees and set up a trout hatchery to safeguard the local ecosystem.
Infrastructure improvements have been another outcome. The reconstruction of the N-15 highway has enhanced mobility in the region, while a new government service centre in Khan Area is helping deliver public services more efficiently.
The project’s success has prompted the China Energy Engineering Corporation to establish its regional headquarters in Pakistan, reflecting the long-term commitment to energy cooperation.
Calling the hydropower plant a “shining symbol” of bilateral ties, Chinese officials stressed that CPEC is not only transforming Pakistan’s energy landscape but also uplifting communities.
