Punjab Imposes Garbage Tax on Homes and Shops

The Punjab government has imposed a province-wide garbage tax under the Suthra Punjab (Clean Punjab) initiative, with the Cabinet Division approving its rollout.

The levy will apply to both residential and commercial properties, starting with upscale urban and rural areas. In Lahore, tax collection will be managed by the Lahore Waste Management Company (LWMC) through its revenue and operational teams.

According to the schedule, urban households on five-marla plots will be charged Rs300 per month, while rural homes of the same size will pay Rs200. In cities, houses between five and 10 marlas will be taxed at Rs500, compared to Rs200 in rural areas.

For larger properties, the rate increases to Rs1,000 per month for 10 marla to one kanal houses in urban areas and Rs400 in villages. Homes between two and four kanals will pay Rs2,000, while houses exceeding four kanals in cities will be charged Rs5,000. Rural homes above two kanals will continue to pay Rs400.

Commercial establishments will also face the new levy. Small shops will pay Rs500 in urban centers and Rs300 in rural areas, medium-sized shops Rs1,000 in cities and Rs700 in villages, while large businesses will be charged Rs3,000 in urban areas and Rs2,000 in rural Punjab.

The LWMC has already begun distributing garbage tax bills as part of the government’s broader initiative to improve sanitation and waste management across the province.
