In a significant move to honor bravery and service, Asif Ali Zardari has approved military awards for 1,989 personnel of the armed and civil forces on Pakistan Day 2026. The decision highlights the country’s commitment to recognizing courage, dedication and outstanding performance, even as national celebrations remained limited this year.
The awards were granted on the recommendation of Shehbaz Sharif under Article 259(2) of the Constitution. These honors are among the highest recognitions given to members of the Pakistan Armed Forces and civil armed services.
This year’s list includes several prestigious awards. A total of 23 personnel have been awarded the Hilal-i-Imtiaz, while 100 received Sitara-i-Imtiaz and 136 were given Tamgha-i-Imtiaz. For acts of bravery, 11 individuals were honored with Sitara-i-Basalat and 475 received Tamgha-i-Basalat. Additionally, 130 personnel were awarded the Imtiazi Sanad.
Service-based awards were also widely distributed. Tamgha-i-Khidmat (Class-I) was awarded to 175 individuals, Class-II to 319, and Class-III to 620 personnel. These awards recognize long-term dedication and exceptional service across various departments.
Although the awards were announced on March 23, the formal investiture ceremony will now take place on April 28, 2026. The delay comes as part of broader austerity measures introduced due to the ongoing global economic challenges, including the Gulf oil crisis.
Unlike previous years, large-scale celebrations were not held. The traditional Pakistan Day parade and major events were cancelled. Instead, the day was observed with simple and dignified flag-hoisting ceremonies across the country.
Despite the scaled-down celebrations, the spirit of Pakistan Day remained strong. The announcement of these awards serves as a reminder of the sacrifices made by the country’s brave men and women, who continue to serve with honor and commitment.
This year’s approach reflects a balance between national pride and economic responsibility, while still ensuring that those who protect and serve the nation are properly recognized.
