Asif Ali Zardari, the President of Pakistan, has approved the appointment of Nehal Hashmi as the new governor of Sindh. The decision was made following the advice of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, who sent a formal summary to the president earlier.
According to officials from the Prime Minister’s Office, the summary recommending Hashmi’s name was forwarded to the president for final approval. Shortly after receiving the recommendation, President Zardari approved the appointment.
Nehal Hashmi, a senior leader of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), will soon take charge of the important constitutional role. He will replace Kamran Khan Tessori, who previously held the position of Sindh governor.
The oath-taking ceremony for the new governor is scheduled to take place at the Governor House Karachi. The ceremony will be held on Friday at 4pm and is expected to be attended by government officials, political leaders and other dignitaries.
Justice Zafar Ahmed Rajput, the Chief Justice of the Sindh High Court, will administer the oath to Hashmi during the ceremony.
Earlier, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif met Nehal Hashmi in Islamabad and congratulated him on his nomination for the post. The prime minister expressed confidence in Hashmi’s ability to fulfill his responsibilities in the province.
There had been speculation for several weeks that the Sindh governorship might change. Reports suggested that the ruling Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) in Sindh was not fully satisfied with the tenure of the outgoing governor Kamran Khan Tessori.
Hashmi expressed gratitude to Nawaz Sharif, the leader of PML-N, and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif for trusting him with the important office.
The appointment marks a significant political development in Sindh, where the governor plays a key constitutional role in representing the federal government in the province.
