Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, in collaboration with her father and PML-N leader Nawaz Sharif, spearheaded a pivotal meeting aimed at bolstering the transportation infrastructure across the province. The agenda encompassed a transformative underground train project in Lahore and the initiation of metro bus projects in three key cities of Punjab.

At the core of the discussions was the meticulous planning required for the Lahore underground train project, with the chief minister stressing the importance of a comprehensive strategy. Deliberations also revolved around the metro bus initiatives in Punjab’s cities, with detailed insights shared on transportation facets, including the provision of bikes for students.

Nawaz Sharif’s directives focused on enhancing student accessibility to motorbikes, advocating for increased availability and affordable monthly installments to alleviate financial pressures. The government’s commitment to supporting students financially was underscored during the meeting.

To materialize these objectives, a scheme was unveiled to offer 19,000 petrol bikes and 1,000 electric bikes to licensed students on interest-free monthly payment plans. The installment amounts were set at less than Rs5,000 for petrol bikes and less than Rs10,000 for e-bikes.

Moreover, a quota system was established to ensure gender equality and equal opportunities for male and female students. Cities will have a 50% allocation each, while villages will maintain a 70% quota for male students and 30% for female students.

The government’s eco-conscious approach was further highlighted through plans to introduce 27 fully electric buses in Lahore, aligning with sustainability goals in transportation. Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz directed prompt action by announcing the commencement of applications for the bike scheme before Eid. This proactive step aims to encourage broad participation in the initiative and facilitate timely distribution of bikes to eligible students across Punjab.
