YouTube is set to introduce an AI-powered age verification system starting August 13, 2025, in an effort to create a safer and more age-appropriate platform experience. Initially launching for a limited group of users in the United States, the system will use machine learning to estimate users’ ages by analysing factors such as account history, viewed content categories, and search activity. If the AI detects a user may be underage, it will automatically enforce age-based restrictions.

For cases where AI cannot confirm age accurately, users will be prompted to verify they are over 18 through government-issued ID or credit card details. The platform says the process will be secure and privacy-focused, with sensitive information protected through encryption.

The AI system is designed to operate in the background, minimising disruption to the viewing experience while enhancing protection for younger audiences. YouTube also emphasised that the technology will not replace parental controls but will work alongside them. The company plans to expand the rollout to other countries after evaluating the results of the initial trial. While YouTube says the feature will help prevent underage access to mature content, it may introduce restrictions that some users could find inconvenient.
