Divorce

A recent social media post by a young Pakistani woman has sparked widespread discussion about divorce, abuse, and the societal pressures women face in Pakistan.

Feeya, who shared the story online, described how her mother recently ended a 30-year abusive marriage. She framed the divorce not as a personal failure, but as a powerful moment of freedom after years of emotional and physical harm. In her post, Feeya revealed that her mother had endured fear, manipulation, and even threats involving weapons.

To mark the occasion, the family held a small celebration with a dinner and cake, viewing it as the beginning of healing rather than a cause for shame. Feeya wrote that it was not about “breaking a home” but about reclaiming peace after years of pain.

The post quickly gained attention and support from many online users, who praised the family’s courage. Some called it an important moment for challenging deep-rooted taboos around divorce in Pakistani society.

However, the post also faced criticism. Some conservative users questioned the public celebration of a private matter, while others referred to religious sentiments, suggesting that while divorce is allowed in Islam, celebrating it was inappropriate.

Feeya later explained that her father had abandoned the family years earlier, and the legal separation was long overdue. She stressed that the post aimed to support women’s dignity, not to encourage divorce.

“This is about ending silence, not breaking families,” she said.
