Sharing the memory, Sanjay Dutt said the incident happened years ago when he returned home late at night and found his father sitting alone in his room, crying. Initially, he thought his father was missing his late wife, actress Nargis. But when he asked what was wrong, Sunil Dutt told him he could not sleep because he was missing “home.”
Sanjay Dutt explained that he was surprised by the response and reminded his father that their home was in India. However, Sunil Dutt replied, “No, you won’t understand. I am missing my real home. I am missing Pakistan.”
According to Sanjay Dutt, his father always considered Pakistan his true home, often remembering it with nostalgia even decades after the partition of the subcontinent.
Sunil Dutt’s family originally belonged to the present-day Rawalpindi division before migrating to India after partition. He was a Hindu Punjabi, while Nargis Dutt, Sanjay Dutt’s mother, was a Bengali Muslim born in Kolkata.
