Renowned musician and former member of the band Junoon, Salman Ahmad, has been booked under the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act (PECA) for allegedly promoting “anti-state propaganda” on social media, according to a police statement.

The FIR was registered at the Defence-A Police Station, citing accusations of spreading false information and targeting the sanctity of state institutions through online platforms.

According to the contents of the FIR, a police officer on duty came across a social media post by Ahmad that was deemed defamatory towards Pakistan’s institutions. The post, the report claims, amounted to fake propaganda against the state, triggering legal action under PECA’s cybercrime provisions.

While the specifics of the social media content remain undisclosed, the case has sparked fresh debate over the boundaries of digital speech and the scope of cybercrime laws in Pakistan. The singer has not yet released an official statement in response to the FIR.

This case follows a similar incident in which a policeman was arrested under PECA for allegedly maligning President Asif Ali Zardari, showing a tightening grip on digital dissent.
