Main Manto Nahi Hoon Sparks Debate Over Romantic Hints

The popular ARY Digital drama Main Manto Nahi Hoon is facing backlash as audiences voice concern over its latest plot direction. At the centre of criticism is the potential romance between Mehmal, played by Sajal Ali, and her university professor Manto, portrayed by Humayun Saeed.

The series follows Mehmal’s journey from a restrictive home to higher education, where she encounters Manto, a quiet academic and writer. Though no relationship has been confirmed, subtle suggestions have fuelled speculation. One sequence showed Mehmal’s aunt teasing her about frequently mentioning her teacher, while another highlighted Manto protecting her from a harassing cousin, leading to a violent confrontation.

Fans say these hints risk romanticising a student-teacher dynamic, a theme many believe should be handled sensitively. Some described the portrayal as “inappropriate and unnecessary,” pointing to the age gap and the ethical issues involved. Social media users expressed disappointment with the lead actors’ script choices, with one comment stating: “Big names should set higher standards.”

Despite the show’s polished direction, high production value and strong ensemble cast, criticism continues to grow. Multiple comments highlighted how teacher-student relationships demand boundaries and respect, warning that such portrayals could influence perceptions negatively.

The drama is penned by Khalil-ur-Rehman Qamar and directed by Nadeem Baig, with supporting performances from Sanam Saeed, Asif Raza Mir, Saba Hamid, Saba Faisal, Saima Noor and Azaan Sami Khan.

Producers Six Sigma Plus and Next Level Entertainment have not addressed the criticism. But the conversation online remains active, with many urging scriptwriters to rethink such storylines.
