The School Education Department has introduced a strict policy barring government school teachers from working in private institutions or academies during official timings.

In a statement, the department said a formal notification has been sent to all schools, warning that any teacher found teaching privately during school hours will face disciplinary action. The decision follows repeated complaints that many teachers were dividing their time between public and private classrooms, affecting their performance in government schools.

Investigations revealed that thousands of teachers were breaching the rules, leading the department to tighten its monitoring system. Officials added that surprise visits and checks will be carried out to track compliance.

The department explained that the move is intended to ensure students in public schools receive the full attention of their teachers. “The quality of education suffers when teachers focus on private income rather than classroom teaching,” an official explained, adding that such behaviour compromises student learning.

Authorities hope this measure will improve classroom engagement and boost student results. Education analysts believe that while the ban could help address absenteeism, it may also face resistance from teachers who rely on additional income from private tutoring.
