Punjab is facing a severe heatwave that has led to the tragic deaths of two schoolchildren, prompting the provincial government to announce early summer holidays for all public and private schools.

Local rescue officials confirmed that an eighth-grade student in Haroonabad died from a heart attack believed to be caused by extreme heat. In a separate incident, another student of the same grade collapsed and died while playing football in Mankera, near Bhakkar.

In light of these alarming events and persistent high temperatures, Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz on Tuesday approved an early start to summer vacations, beginning on May 28. The decision was made following consultations with the education department and other concerned authorities.

Officials said the move aims to protect students and teaching staff from dangerous heat-related conditions. Until the vacations begin, schools will follow a shortened schedule, opening from 7:30 am to 11:30 am to limit exposure during peak heat hours.

A senior education department official stated that the early closure follows warnings from health experts and the meteorological department, both of which have advised urgent precautions due to rising temperatures.

The official added that student safety remains the top priority, and this step is part of broader efforts to reduce the risk of heatstroke and other heat-related illnesses.

With temperatures expected to remain high in the coming weeks, authorities have urged parents, teachers, and students to remain cautious and stay hydrated as the province continues to battle intense weather conditions.
