A tragic incident in Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) has once again raised concerns about the mental health of students facing academic pressure. In the Chakthi area, a student named Kashif reportedly ended his life by jumping into a river after failing his matriculation exams.
According to local reports, Kashif’s elder brother Wqas also jumped in to save him, but both were swept away by the river’s strong current. The brothers, residents of the Daran neighbourhood, went missing shortly after the incident. Rescue 1122 teams launched a search operation to recover their bodies.
A video posted by Kashif on TikTok about an hour before the incident has since gone viral. In the clip, he is seen reciting emotional poetry, which many believe hinted at his intentions.

The incident has triggered widespread grief and reflection online. Social media users expressed sorrow and frustration over the immense academic pressure on students. Many urged parents and teachers to adopt a more balanced approach that focuses on emotional support and mental well-being alongside academic performance.
This is not the first such case in AJK. In February, a seventh-grade girl in the Hattian Bala district allegedly took her own life after repeatedly failing her exams.
These recurring tragedies point to a deeper issue — the lack of mental health awareness and support systems for struggling students.
