The Punjab government has launched a strict drive to address absenteeism among teachers following complaints that many are teaching at private academies during official working hours.

According to education department officials, a circular has been sent to all school principals, asking them to monitor staff attendance more closely. Authorities said that some teachers have not only joined private academies but also set up their own centres, an act considered a violation of service rules.

The department expressed concern that these teachers often give more attention to students attending their academies than those in public schools, which affects the quality of education.

To tackle the issue, principals have been instructed to maintain updated records of staff and ensure presence checks both inside and outside school premises. The directive also warned that district education officers could face action if they fail to enforce the rules.

The department confirmed that disciplinary steps would be taken against any teacher found working in a private academy during official hours. The move is aimed at improving accountability and ensuring better focus on classroom teaching.
