Veteran actor and activist Prakash Raj has expressed strong support for Abir Gulaal, a film starring Pakistani actor Fawad Khan, which is facing rising opposition in India. The film, reportedly centred around themes of identity and conflict, has sparked controversy among certain political and social groups.

Raj, known for speaking out on issues of free speech, criticised the increasing trend of banning films. He warned that suppressing art not only limits creative voices but also spreads fear in society and weakens democratic values.

In a recent statement, Raj said he did not support the banning of any film—regardless of its political tone or perceived message. He argued that audiences are capable of making informed choices and do not need restrictions to decide what to watch.

The actor also criticised the indirect efforts being made to block Abir Gulaal’s release. While there has been no official government ban, reports suggest informal pressure is being used to delay the film or prevent screenings.

Raj expressed concern that targeting films based on the cast or subject matter could lead India down a dangerous path. He said that allowing such censorship risks turning a democracy into a space where creative voices are silenced and diversity is discouraged.

The controversy has reignited wider discussions about freedom of expression and cross-border collaboration in Indian cinema. The presence of a Pakistani actor in a leading role has once again drawn attention to ongoing tensions between the two countries.

Industry observers say that although Abir Gulaal has not broken any laws, the current political climate makes it harder for films dealing with sensitive subjects or foreign artists to reach audiences.
