Elon Musk’s company, X Corp, has filed a lawsuit against a startup that is trying to bring back the Twitter name. The case was filed in a federal court in Delaware after the startup asked authorities to cancel X’s Twitter trademarks so it could launch a new social media platform.
The startup, called Operation Bluebird, is based in Virginia. It recently requested the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office to cancel the “Twitter” trademarks owned by X. The company claimed that X had abandoned the brand after changing Twitter’s name to X. Operation Bluebird said it wants to use the Twitter name for a new platform called “twitter.new.”
X strongly rejected these claims. In the lawsuit, the company said that the Twitter brand is still active and valuable. X stated that the name is “alive and well” and not free for anyone to take. The company accused Operation Bluebird of trying to steal the Twitter identity and said the move clearly breaks trademark laws.
Elon Musk bought Twitter in 2022 for $44 billion. In 2023, he officially rebranded the platform as X and announced plans to move away from the Twitter name and its famous bird logo. Despite the rebrand, X argues that it still owns the Twitter trademarks and has not given up its legal rights.
X also warned that allowing another platform to use the Twitter name would confuse users. People might think the new service is linked to the original Twitter, even if it is not. Because of this, X is asking the court to block Operation Bluebird’s plans and is also seeking financial damages.
So far, neither X nor Operation Bluebird has made public comments about the lawsuit. The case highlights how valuable brand names can remain, even after a company changes its identity. The court’s decision will determine whether the Twitter name can be reused or remains protected under X Corp.
