The Punjab government has launched a new QR code system for property tax notices in an effort to tackle fake challans and boost transparency.

The updated system, introduced on July 15, was announced by Director General of Excise Umar Sher Chatha. In the first phase, 2.5 million tax notices with unique QR codes have been issued across all districts of Punjab.

Under the new process, tax inspectors scan the QR codes upon delivering the notices, allowing for real-time updates in the province’s digital tax database. This move is aimed at preventing duplication and misuse of challans.

Chatha explained that the system will also help identify previously unregistered properties and bring them into the tax net, increasing the government’s revenue. Officials expect the new method to generate an additional Rs 7 to 10 billion.

The initiative is further supported by GIS-based data, which will help in creating more accurate property records at both the city and district levels.

The new system also makes it easier for citizens to complete their property tax assessments and submit PT-10 forms online, reducing the need for in-person visits.
