The federal government is expected to raise petroleum prices from July 16, with petrol and diesel likely to become more expensive for consumers across Pakistan.

Sources within the oil industry suggest that petrol prices may go up by around Rs6.60 per litre, while high-speed diesel (HSD) could see an increase of approximately Rs5.27 per litre. These revised prices, if approved, will remain in effect for 15 days.

The Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (Ogra) is due to send its pricing summary to the Ministry of Energy (Petroleum Division) on Monday. The report is based on data from oil marketing companies, which submitted their cost calculations earlier this week.

Final pricing decisions will be made by the Ministry of Finance, following consultation with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif. Although Ogra prepares technical estimates based on international oil rates and currency fluctuations, the government ultimately decides whether to absorb the cost or pass it on to consumers.

An official from the energy ministry, requesting anonymity, said international oil trends and the exchange rate are key factors behind any fuel price revision. However, the government also considers its fiscal space before announcing new rates.

As of July 1, 2025, petrol is priced at Rs266.79 per litre, while HSD stands at Rs272.98. A Rs6.60 hike in petrol would push prices past Rs273, while diesel could near Rs278 per litre.
