The State Bank of Pakistan has rolled out a national campaign to promote digital payments at livestock markets ahead of Eidul Azha, aiming to reduce the heavy reliance on cash during the festive shopping period.

The initiative, titled Go Cashless, is being implemented in 54 selected cattle markets across the country and will continue until June 6 or the night of Eid. In these markets, buyers will be encouraged to use digital payment methods not only for purchasing animals but also for related services such as fodder, water, and parking.

According to officials, the campaign is being run in collaboration with commercial banks and builds on a pilot project launched last year. The effort is part of the central bank’s broader goal to improve access to digital financial services.

To make digital transactions more accessible, the SBP has temporarily relaxed limits on selected accounts. From May 19 to June 15, Level-1 branchless banking, Asaan, Asaan Digital, and merchant accounts will not be subject to daily transaction caps, and monthly limits have been raised to Rs5 million.

Authorities have highlighted that digital payments offer greater convenience, reduce the risks associated with carrying cash, and improve financial transparency. It is hoped that the shift to digital platforms will also ease pressure on cash management systems during one of Pakistan’s busiest spending seasons.

The SBP has called on both consumers and traders to embrace digital solutions, noting their growing importance in the country’s financial landscape.
