Well-known Pakistani poet, religious scholar, and columnist Syed Salman Gilani has passed away in Lahore. He was 74 years old. He died on 21 February 2026 after a long illness. According to family sources, he was under treatment at Sheikh Zayed Hospital, where he breathed his last due to heart and liver complications. His condition had also worsened after a recent attack of pneumonia.
Born in 1951, Syed Salman Gilani belonged to the respected Gilani family. His family traces its lineage to the famous Sufi saint Abdul Qadir Gilani. He was the son of religious scholar Syed Amin Gilani and followed his father’s path in religious learning and service.
Syed Salman Gilani was widely known for his unique style of poetry. He beautifully combined devotional themes with satire and humor. His poetry reflected love for Islam and deep respect for the Holy Prophet (PBUH). At the same time, he was admired for his sharp wit and refined humor in Urdu satirical poetry.
One of his most famous humorous ghazals, “Usne Mujhe Salam Kiya Lam Ke Baghair,” became very popular among poetry lovers. His work was appreciated by people of all ages.
He was also a strong supporter of the Khatm-e-Nabuwwat movement and often spoke about religious issues. Gilani regularly appeared on television programs, including PTV Home and Dunya News, where he recited his poetry and shared his views.
His death is a great loss to Pakistan’s literary and religious community. Many admirers have expressed deep sorrow over his passing.
