The Punjab government has taken a significant step by ordering the closure of all schools, colleges, and universities throughout the province from March 10 to March 31, 2026. The announcement has affected millions of students across Punjab, but officials have assured parents and students that learning will continue through alternative arrangements.
According to the notification issued by the Punjab Education Department, all educational institutions will shut their physical campuses for the next three weeks. However, this doesn’t mean students will be left behind in their studies. Educational authorities have instructed all schools, colleges, and universities to immediately shift to online teaching mode. Teachers will conduct virtual classes to ensure that the academic session remains uninterrupted and students don’t suffer any loss in their education.
Despite the closure, the government has made it clear that examinations will not be affected. All scheduled exams including Grade 8 assessments and board examinations will take place according to the original timetable.
Fuel Saving Plan of Maryam Nawaz Sharif
Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has launched a comprehensive fuel-saving campaign across the provincial administration. As part of this initiative:
Official petrol allocations for all provincial ministers have been suspended with immediate effect
Fuel allowances for government officers’ vehicles have been slashed by 50%
Non-essential government travel has been discouraged
The closure of educational institutions is seen as a major step in reducing fuel consumption, as thousands of vehicles—including school vans, buses, and private cars transport students daily across the province.
What Did the Education Minister Say?
Punjab’s Education Minister, Rana Sikandar Hayat, addressed the matter in an official statement, acknowledging the difficulties this decision might cause but stressing its necessity.
“We understand that this is an extraordinary situation, and we have taken this step keeping in view the larger national interest,” the minister said. “However, we are committed to ensuring that our children’s education does not suffer. That’s why we’ve made online classes mandatory during this period.”
He urged students, parents, and teachers to cooperate with the government during this challenging time and to make the best use of online learning facilities.
How Long Will This Last?
As of now, the closure is in effect from March 10 to March 31, 2026. Whether this period will be extended or schools will reopen on April 1 depends entirely on how the fuel situation develops in the coming weeks.
