The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has conveyed to the International Cricket Council (ICC) that the national team’s participation in the upcoming World Cup, scheduled to be held in India later this year, is contingent upon the government’s directives, as reported by The News.

This announcement comes amidst India’s unwavering stance on the conditions for Pakistan’s participation in the Asia Cup 2023, which has resulted in the event being planned for a neutral venue. Due to strained political relations, bilateral cricket matches between Pakistan and India have been suspended, and they only face each other in multi-team tournaments.

In a crucial meeting held in Lahore, PCB officials met with ICC Chairman Greg Barclay and Chief Executive Geoff Allardice, emphasizing that Pakistan would follow the government’s guidance regarding participation in the World Cup if the Indian team did not visit Pakistan for the Asia Cup.

During their two-day visit to Pakistan, the ICC officials were received by Najam Sethi, Chairman of the PCB Management Committee. The meeting addressed various topics, including the PCB’s share in ICC revenue and matters concerning the Asian Cricket Council (ACC). However, no agreement was reached, prompting negotiations to extend for an additional day before the ICC officials depart.

This visit marks ICC Chairman Barclay’s first trip to Pakistan, signifying the importance of the discussions held between the PCB and the global cricketing body.

The PCB has been diligently working to host the Asia Cup within its own borders, as organizing the event in another country would have a detrimental impact on its efforts to revive international cricket in Pakistan. However, their efforts have faced challenges due to India’s persistent resistance, which undermines Pakistan’s initiatives.

The PCB’s approach to seeking government approval reflects the importance of considering the political landscape when making decisions regarding cricketing engagements with India. The final determination regarding Pakistan’s participation in the World Cup rests in the hands of the government, as the PCB acknowledges the significance of aligning with their directives.

As negotiations continue between the PCB and the ICC officials, it remains to be seen how the situation will unfold and whether a resolution can be reached that satisfies all stakeholders involved. The outcome will have far-reaching implications for cricket in the region and the relationship between Pakistan and India in the sporting arena.
