In a recent development, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chief Imran Khan has accused individuals with guns and involved in arson during the May 9 protests against his arrest of being “planted amongst the demonstrators.” Khan emphasized that he had consistently urged PTI workers to engage only in peaceful protests, sharing a pre-recorded video message from March 22 as evidence of his stance.

Furthermore, Khan claimed that these incidents were part of a larger plan, which he had uncovered after an assassination attempt against him in March. He alleged that the Inspector General (IG) of Punjab and the IG of Islamabad, along with their handlers, had devised a new plan involving an operation near his residence in Zaman Park. The intention was to have squads pretending to be PTI supporters and assassinate several police officials, inciting a violent response leading to casualties similar to the Model Town massacre. Khan cautioned the Punjab police about the possible loss of their personnel and urged his party workers to refrain from reacting to provocation.

In response to the recent announcement from the Special Corps Commanders Conference regarding trying those involved in attacks on military installations under relevant laws, including the Pakistan Army Act and the Official Secret Act, the PTI issued a statement. The party considered this announcement significant and believed it to be a step in the right direction. They highlighted the need for a well-thought-out plan behind the recent acts of violence, emphasizing that government buildings, military properties, and innocent citizens had been affected.

The PTI statement stressed the importance of the Constitution of Pakistan as the source of guidance, calling for constitutional solutions to complex crisis situations. The party claimed that armed miscreants had been introduced into peaceful protests as part of a premeditated plan, leading to violence and chaos. They called for an all-round investigation to identify the elements responsible for sedition and chaos and expressed their faith in the supremacy of the Constitution and the law.

The PTI expressed concern over personal and group prejudices and the haste in implementing the law, emphasizing that justice should not be administered by one person or institution acting as judge, jury, and executioner. They advocated for consensus among political parties and stressed the importance of public support and conducting quick, fair, and transparent elections to empower the people in decision-making processes.

Imran Khan’s allegations of “planted” miscreants behind the May 9 violence and the PTI’s call for constitutional solutions reflect the ongoing political tensions in Pakistan. As the country seeks stability and justice, an independent inquiry into the incidents is necessary to identify the responsible parties and ensure transparency. The PTI’s emphasis on the Constitution, democracy, and the importance of public support highlights their commitment to democratic principles.
