Fake Holiday Notice Circulates as Karachi Braces for Heavy Rains

The Sindh Education Department has dismissed social media rumours suggesting a holiday for educational institutions in Karachi due to expected heavy rains.

A spokesperson for the department confirmed that no such notification had been issued and labelled the circulating message as “fake.” The official clarified that all schools and colleges will remain open on Tuesday and that any closure decision will be made only after assessing the situation.

The denial came after the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) forecast heavy rainfall in Karachi from September 8 to 10. Authorities have urged citizens to take precautions, avoid unnecessary travel, and stay alert to official announcements.

Meanwhile, Karachi Mayor Barrister Murtaza Wahab assured citizens that preparations are underway to manage the rains. He said 46 major drains, including Gujjar, Orangi, and Mehmoodabad, had been cleared, with additional pumps deployed at choke points. Water and sewerage vehicles are on standby, while relief camps have been set up in low-lying areas.

Wahab urged the public to remain calm and avoid panic, adding that political criticism during this time was “hypocrisy.” He said the administration’s priority is protecting Karachi and ensuring quick drainage operations.

The clarification from the education department aims to prevent confusion among parents and students, underscoring the importance of relying on official sources in times of crisis.
